All I have to say is, the Financial Aid Fairies had better be really freaking nice to me.
I'm not usually the guy to complain about wasted time, because hey, infinite amounts of it over here anyway. But I would rather tunnel into the Danger Room by bashing my head into the ground than fill out the FAFSA ever again. The guy at NYU got bouncy about my test scores when I visited--why do I have to do this timesucking hell-beast, again?
And remind me to send Mom something . . . special . . . for suggesting I fill out the form with a typewriter instead of trusting my own handwriting. I mean, okay, we've probably got King Henry V's typewriter somewhere up in the attic, because this place has more antiques than the Smithsonian, but that doesn't mean I'm panting at the chance to fiddle with knobs for half an hour and still not get the formatting right. Stupid typewriters.
Actually, do they let you do the FAFSA online yet? I should check.

Don't you love Google?

It is quite possibly my very best HTML-formatted friend. Take that, ancient and outdated technology!
. . . yeah, I've been doing paperwork for too long. Paperwork, and trying to figure out a. if I want a third major and b. what it would be if I do.
x_cypher
January 21 2005, 09:37:17 UTC
Okay, I'll bite. What would the first two be?
x_crowdofone
January 21 2005, 09:46:01 UTC
Communications and film. I haven't told you this yet? Also kinda want to do English, or maybe history, and I toyed with the idea of business very briefly before I realized it'd be full of unwashed Trump cultists.
And I was thinking about at least auditing a physics class or two, because I hear the scenery's gonna be nice next year. ;)
Y'know, the look on my freshman advisor's face is gonna be priceless. :)

You should bring a camera so you can take a picture of that.
I should probably sit down and decide on a major. But not today.

January 21 2005, 11:58:01 UTC
Wait, so you can send a duplicate out, learn two different things, and then recombine and retain all the knowledge?
x_crowdofone
January 21 2005, 12:08:09 UTC
Yeah, but it's a lot easier just to run both dupes live. Also, getting a lump of memories all at once instead of as they happen gives me kind of an ice cream headache, only without getting the ice cream first. I multitrack really well. :)

So, in theory, you could cram for exams AND make out with your girlfriend at the same time? Man, did I ever get shortchanged on mutant powers.
x_crowdofone
January 21 2005, 12:12:39 UTC
Yeah, theory, that's the ticket.
Although, to be fair, some things take a lot more of my attention than others, which helps to explain my constant C in physics.
And who are you, Doug? Sheesh, what is it with people who have the coolest power ever thinking they suck?
x_forge
January 21 2005, 12:13:52 UTC
Oh, no. My power rules. It's way cooler than Ramsey's. It's just that I could do so much MORE with more than one of me.
x_crowdofone
January 21 2005, 12:16:55 UTC
Oh, okay. Yeah, I get that a lot.
You'd be amazed how fast you'd run through hobbies, though. Way too many hours of the day to fill, sometimes.
x_forge
January 21 2005, 12:18:38 UTC
Hobbies? Perish the thought. There's entire scientific disciplines I haven't got to yet.

I realized it'd be full of unwashed Trump cultists.
At NYU? Oh yeah.
And love, you do realize I'm starting with third year courses, don't you? Not that I'd mind having you there, but your brain may hurt by the end of it.
x_crowdofone
January 21 2005, 21:51:04 UTC
I did kinda wonder. Maybe next year, when you've learned everything they have to teach you and you're the youngest TA in the history of the school? :)
x_kitten
January 21 2005, 22:17:37 UTC
Somehow I think even the first year undergrads would object to a 18 year old TA grad student.
Besides, surely between them the physics, math, science and comp sci departments can keep me busy...
x_crowdofone
January 21 2005, 22:33:13 UTC
It'd be good for them. Keep them humble.
And you'd think so, but I have this picture in my head of you going in for the campus visit and the guy taking a look at your transcript and test scores and offering you all kinds of stuff to go there. Like your own lab. Or the football team. So I make no assumptions. :)
. . . They didn't offer you the football team, did they?
x_kitten
January 21 2005, 23:11:03 UTC
Come off it, love, they weren't that enthusiastic. That'd be creepy. Besides, NYU hasn't even got a football team, I don't think. They do have a Latin Ballroom Dancing club, though, and a 'Dance Team', although I don't know about that. Dance teams are like a cross between cheerleading, pole dancing and marching band for basketball.
x_crowdofone
January 21 2005, 23:27:54 UTC
I was kidding. Although they darn well better have been some kind of enthusiastic, because they don't see the likes of you very often.
Pole dancing, eh?
And now I think I have a challenge to fulfill. ;)
x_kitten
January 21 2005, 23:35:23 UTC
Well, they let me in, didn't they? :)
Yes, pole dancing. I mean I can't quite call it stripping, because they end up wearing the same amount of clothes they start with. It's just a very small amount. Hmph.
And yes, you... whoops. there you are. meep
x_foliate
January 21 2005, 09:42:26 UTC
So... very... jealous...

January 21 2005, 09:48:09 UTC
What, like you aren't going to multiple-major anyway? I just get to have free time while I do it. :)
x_foliate
January 21 2005, 09:59:36 UTC
Yeah, I know. But I think I'm getting old; I wouldn't mind that free time thing now and again.

Clearly the next step for you is a nursing home, where you can wear a bathrobe and dying slippers all day long, play a killer game of bingo, and harass the attendants.

FAFSA?

Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It's an application for financial aid for college students.
x_mirage
January 21 2005, 11:48:15 UTC
interesting.
guess I won't need that
x_cypher
January 21 2005, 11:51:45 UTC
Not planning on going to college? There's a lot of free financial aid for Native American college students, if I recall correctly.
x_mirage
January 21 2005, 11:53:29 UTC
yeah. without kids. and you ahve to have grades. and money. lots more money than any aid gives. THOUSANDS
x_cypher
January 21 2005, 11:57:25 UTC
I imagine that if you look hard enough, there's aid out there for just about every situation.
x_mirage
January 21 2005, 12:01:28 UTC
you can't work full time and raise a kid and go to shcool.
x_cypher
January 21 2005, 12:08:02 UTC
The point of finding financial aid is to not have to work full time. Some schools have programs where you can work part time to defray your tuition. And it's not like there aren't a lot of people here willing to help you raise your kid. All I'm saying is that if you're committed to it, you can usually find a way to make it happen.

Given that there have been times when near-fisticuffs have erupted over whose turn it is to watch Miles, I doubt you'll have any trouble finding babysitters, should you need them. :) Choosing from the many qualified applicants may be more difficult.
Ahem. Consider this my attempt at being first in line.

As your guidance counsellor, I suggest you stop in and see me during my office hours at some point. Ever since my former collegue fucked off, I've had to handle the college paperwork, and I *think* I just about understand it now.
But, in short: if you would like to go to college, then Xavier's will do everything in it's considerable power to assist you to do so, on whatever terms you are comfortable with.

yes sir.
x_pete
January 21 2005, 14:14:51 UTC
Also, don't call me sir, for god's sake. It makes me feel extremely old.
I will thank my colleagues, and those students who don't wish to have something unpleasant happen to them in their sleep, to say nothing at this point.
And Amanda, I can hear you laughing from here. Stop it.

is Mr. Wisdom better?
x_pete
January 21 2005, 16:12:01 UTC
Not by much, although I can't seem to stop half of the kids here for calling me that, anyway. Mr Wisdom is my Dad, not me. Call me Pete. Or, you know, "Oi, you!"
x_kitten

-g- Some of us call him 'sir' anyway, cause he gets the funniest look on his face.

I'm sure Mr. Wisdom secretly appreciates it when we call him 'sir'.

And x_cable is equally pleased when I call him 'Mr. Dayspring'.

Yes, uncle. *sniggers* Too bad Dom's on her way back to Berlin from one of those Asian countries with too many Ks and Zs in the name. She'd enjoy this.
