Lovely day today, isn't it?

Girls should come with signs.
Well, not Kitty, because she explains things, in English, and is wonderful like that, and doesn't expect me to read her mind in order to find out that "here, don't you think this would make a good gift for your girlfriend when you get back to your own dimension?" really means "I have a crush on you." The rest of you? Signs. I mean it. Little translatey signs.
Lorna? How much begging and pleading and other forms of bribery will it take to get you to make that fancy dinner I didn't want you to make around this time last year? Because I'll do a full grovelling Greek chorus.

I... am confused.
And not going to wear a sign.
x_crowdofone
September 1 2004, 11:23:06 UTC
Um. Apparently Disa had a crush on me, when we were in Asgard. And apparently it was obvious enough that Kitty was able to pick it up when she's never met Disa and it's a whole dimension away and several weeks later. And I kinda feel dumb.
x_rahne
September 1 2004, 11:29:13 UTC
Oh dear.
x_crowdofone
September 1 2004, 11:32:32 UTC
Well, yeah, that was about my reaction. Only with more feeling like an idiot and wanting signs.
Because how was I supposed to know? It's not like I'm the kind of guy who gets chased all the time. The only time it's happened so far, I was chasing right back, so we sort of collided. Only without the actual colliding. Well, most of the time.

Yeah, I hear we're weird like that. Mixed messages and secret code words and everything.
Hopefully geek girls are the exception.
That doesn't mean I'm not snickering, just a little bit, behind my hand.
x_crowdofone
September 1 2004, 11:41:44 UTC
Snickering will get you an extra-large sign with little blinky lights.
Why couldn't she just have dumped paint on me and run away, I want to know. That I would've understood.
x_foliate
September 1 2004, 11:59:12 UTC
Oh! Semi-tasteful sparkly!
Oh, Jamie. I do hope you don't pull Kitty's hair.
x_crowdofone
September 1 2004, 12:00:44 UTC
Nope. Play with it sometimes, but no yanking.
x_kitten
September 1 2004, 15:38:22 UTC
Snickering will get you an extra-large sign with little blinky lights.
Wait, I thought you said I didn't have to wear a sign? -pouts-
See, and here I wasn't going to tell anyone to save you the embarassment. Well, except probably I would have told 'Yana. And maybe Jubes and Terry. And I probably would have had to have told Paige and Clarice...
x_crowdofone
September 1 2004, 15:46:36 UTC
You don't. You're an exception to the snickering rule too. But if you want to justify how exceptional you are, don't let me stop you. ;)
And, see? Just as well I told everyone. Saved time.
x_kitten
September 1 2004, 16:14:53 UTC
-grin-
My way would have been funnier... Will just have to find something else to gossip with my assorted suitemates about.
x_crowdofone
September 1 2004, 16:16:37 UTC
I dunno, I think Doug would argue with you there. He still breaks off into fits of giggles whenever he looks at me.
You can still go show them the bracelet, anyway. :) And I'm confident in your gossiping abilities.
x_kitten
September 1 2004, 16:18:09 UTC
Yeah, but if it had gone my slow way you wouldn`t have known for certain what he was giggling over and he`d still have gotten to giggle.
Ooooh, yes. Must show off new glittery thing! It`s shiny and they can tease you about it. -kiss-

We make a perfect amount of sense. I could have told you she had a crush on you if you had mentioned bracelets.
Now, boys - boys do not make sense. Boys think dirty socks are funny and do not see perfectly obvious gestures as what they really mean.
Re: ...
x_crowdofone
September 1 2004, 11:44:03 UTC
But she said it was for Kitty, to make up for making her worry by getting kidnapped. I just don't get it.
And dirty socks are funny. They're like stink bombs, only for free.
Re: ...
x_tarot

It makes sense to me.
Re: ...
x_crowdofone
September 1 2004, 11:51:43 UTC
And that would be why you need to wear a little translatey sign, so that sane people can understand what you mean instead of what you say.
Re: ...
x_tarot
September 1 2004, 11:56:19 UTC
There is no secret Girl-language. If there was, Doug would speak it.
Of course, he might, and I suppose no one besides me would ever know. he does seem to understand what *I* mean most of the time.
Re: ...
x_crowdofone
September 1 2004, 11:57:08 UTC
Aah. So what you really mean is, there is a secret language. I think I'm getting the hang of this.

September 1 2004, 12:00:37 UTC
Perhaps. Perhaps not. Ask Doug. ;)

Pardon me. Pay no attention to the raucous laughing fit I seem to have come down with. I'll be just fine in a couple.
*snicker*
Days, that is.
x_crowdofone
September 1 2004, 11:52:44 UTC
I know where you sleep, Threepio.
x_cypher
September 1 2004, 11:57:47 UTC
Your point being? I was already expecting dastardly revenge for the packing peanuts, so it's not like it'd be a big shock or anything.
Besides, I'm finding this whole "point and laugh" thing to be immensely therapeutic or something. Not that I'm in need of therapy right now, but I figure I'll just save up all these giggles for when something bad happens, and then cheer myself up by reviewing how clueless you are. :)
x_crowdofone
September 1 2004, 12:00:10 UTC
You're just laughing because your mutant power lets you understand Secret Girl Language.
x_cypher
September 1 2004, 12:02:08 UTC
It's not always in the things that are said, ol' buddy ol' pal. Sometimes you have to listen to the things that people _don't_ say. And it's not just something that I can do because of my power, though I have an advantage. All it takes is paying a bit of attention.
x_crowdofone
September 1 2004, 12:04:17 UTC
So what you're saying is, because she didn't say she had a crush on me, she had a crush on me?
Doug, the entire world except for Kitty doesn't say they have a crush on me. That's kinda creepy.
x_cypher
September 1 2004, 12:05:52 UTC
Okay, maybe I didn't explain it quite right. What I meant was, sometimes people say things with their mouths that they don't mean. But it's very hard to lie with your body, if that makes sense. And it's not just girls who do it, either.
x_crowdofone
September 1 2004, 12:07:11 UTC
Except that I'm pretty sure she actually meant "give this to your girlfriend." I mean, it's not a guy's bracelet. Gunnar made it for Disa's mom.
...
x_tarot
September 1 2004, 12:09:37 UTC
Wait, did she -say- that?
Re: ...
x_crowdofone
September 1 2004, 12:10:08 UTC
Well, yeah. How else would I have known?
Re: ...
x_tarot
September 1 2004, 12:11:49 UTC
Jamie. She outright told you she was giving you a family heirloom and you did not think she meant more than just "Your girlfriend sounds nice, she should have a nice shiny bracelet."
Re: ...
x_crowdofone
September 1 2004, 12:13:18 UTC
Well, I tried to tell her it was too important and she should keep it instead of giving it to me, but she said it'd be insulting if I didn't accept it.
And, y'know, it is, for dwarves. Giving gifts is a whole traditional thing, and once somebody offers you something you really aren't supposed to say no.
Re: ...
x_tarot
September 1 2004, 12:16:13 UTC
At least it is not the other way around. I would hate for you to have a crush on a dwarf girl, and have to call you Carrot for the next week.
Re: ...
x_crowdofone
September 1 2004, 12:17:57 UTC
Nope. Crush quota is full. :)
Re: ...
x_tarot
September 1 2004, 12:20:08 UTC
Good. I would not want to have to figure out who Vimes or anyone else from those books are. It would cause headaches.
Re: ...
x_kitten
September 1 2004, 15:36:34 UTC
Given we already have the wearwolf, shouldn't we be starting with figuring out who Carrot is from her? Cause, definitely not Jamie.
Re: ...
x_cypher
September 1 2004, 12:13:11 UTC
People do not give other people family heirlooms just because they're nice people, dude. And...did it say anything on it? An inscription?
Re: ...

September 1 2004, 12:13:29 UTC
Er. Yes.
Re: ...
x_cypher
September 1 2004, 12:14:38 UTC
*grin* And would you like to share that inscription with the class, roomie mine?
Re: ...
x_crowdofone
September 1 2004, 12:15:36 UTC
Not particularly, no. Because you'd laugh more.
I really am the biggest idiot in the world and all lesser imbeciles really do make way before me.
Re: ...
x_cypher
September 1 2004, 12:17:39 UTC
*shrugs* At least you mean well, though. There's plenty of imbeciles in the world who are agressively idiotic.
'Sides, it could be worse. I mean, from what you said, Disa sounds like a really nice girl and all.
...andyoumightnothavebeentheonlyonetobreakaheartinAsgard...
Um. Nevermind. ;-)

DOUG?
Re: ...
x_cypher
September 1 2004, 12:21:42 UTC
Um. Remeber Rannveig? The very nice barmaid at Jorundr's mead hall? She was apparently sweet on me after I convinced a very large Asgardian warrior that he really didn't want to take liberties with her. Not to worry, I set her straight...although that is kinda what led to the whole "betrothed" mixup...
And don't ask about how I figured out that Amanda was with the Enchantress...
Re: ...
x_tarot
September 1 2004, 12:29:59 UTC
I think I was better off NOT knowing.
Amanda told me about meeting you at the Enchantress' party when we were talking a week ago.
Re: ...

Um, yeah. It was pretty mind-blowing, realizing who she was.
Re: ...
x_tarot

The blonde hair was a bit of a surprise.
She told me that the spell you had to cast had a -very- amusing restriction.
Re: ...
x_cypher
September 1 2004, 12:34:06 UTC
Yeah, well, I'm just glad she didn't make a big deal about it, especially with Miles right there. *grumble*
Re: ...
x_tarot
September 1 2004, 12:37:32 UTC
Yes, that would have been -very- awkward.
I did end up explaining the reason it was not longer a problem.

September 1 2004, 12:22:14 UTC
Oh, she was. Best friend I could've asked for, showing up out of nowhere like I did.
And, you know what? Just to put the cap on it all? I told her she was, right after she handed me the bracelet. Well-meaning I may be, but dumb.
And you do realize I've read just as many Dragonlance books as you have and always kinda liked the tinker gnomes, don't you? I need company in my idiocy, so spill. :)

Re: ...
x_crowdofone
September 1 2004, 12:26:02 UTC
Aha.
And wait, you were going around telling people you and Angie were getting married? Catch hell for that much? :)
Re: ...
x_cypher
September 1 2004, 12:28:41 UTC
Um. Maybe a bit. It's a social context thing, really. Either you're having a completely sexual relationship with someone, or you're married. Betrothal is the closest thing Asgard has to the idea of "girlfriend". If you're betrothed, you're with that person only, but you aren't married yet. It makes sense, in a "back in the Middle Ages" sort of way.
Re: ...
x_crowdofone
September 1 2004, 12:30:34 UTC
Funny, I got away with just telling people I was in love with someone but we weren't talking about marriage yet because we were still too young by the customs of our culture.
But yeah. Context. That's the ticket. ;)

Really? I can get waiters and a solo harpist and have courses and stuff? Eeeeeeeeeeeee!
x_crowdofone
September 1 2004, 18:31:49 UTC
I'm doing just fine in the math I should be doing. Especially now that refresher courses are available.
And yeah, all that. No grovelling, huh? :)
x_polarisstar
September 1 2004, 19:09:13 UTC
Well that's all that matters then. We'll just ignore the poor dwarf girl who cracked you over the head with the bracelet of obviousness.
EEEEEEEEeeeee! I have to call Chef Marcel.
x_crowdofone
September 1 2004, 19:11:00 UTC
It was only obvious by insane girl logic. Besides, she's something like the most eligible bachelorette in Nidavellir, so I'm sure she'll find somebody nice.
x_polarisstar
September 1 2004, 19:15:28 UTC
She gave you jewelry! It doesn't actually get more obvious.
x_crowdofone
September 1 2004, 19:16:38 UTC
To give to Kitty! She was helping me apologize!
x_polarisstar

Jewelry is only an apology when it's not a gift to you first!
x_crowdofone

And this is why you need signs. How am I supposed to figure out all these elaborate rules?
x_polarisstar

How hard is it to figure out that jewelry=hey, baby? It's been that way for centuries.
x_crowdofone

It hasn't been that way for centuries directed at me. Girls other than Kitty don't flirt with me.

How do you tell?
x_crowdofone
September 2 2004, 10:41:16 UTC
Well, apparently the bracelet was this huge obvious clue thing with clues. And in retrospect, she sure did spend a heck of a lot of time hanging around with me, considering she probably had . . . whatever it is she did when she wasn't stuffing magic applesauce into Midgarders with more guts than brains.
