Doc MacTaggart is a genius. This we knew. It isn't the wacky bit.

The wacky bit is, the genius thing she did tonight was figure out how my powers work. Kitty, Forge, you'll both be very happy to know I'm not creating matter out of nothing. I am, in fact, bringing ectoplasm off the astral plane (or somewhere else there's ectoplasm) and organizing it into perfect copies of myself down to the atomic level. Which is pretty clever of me considering I have no idea how I do it.

Oh, yeah, and apparently at some point my regular-matter body got replaced by an ectoplasm one. Doug, quiet down, you can make all the jokes you want in the morning and if you try to trap me I'm gonna cross streams on your sorry butt.

So, yeah. I'm no longer unexplainable by modern science. That's kinda cool.

I suppose that makes sense - Newton never considered multiphasic dimensions when he wrote his Principia, it seems. From all the information I can find on 'ectoplasm', it's just neutral matter with a different quantum frequency and weird harmonics with psionic wavelengths. Most every mutant power that makes something out of thin air is theorized to be assisted by ectoplasmic mass generation. Granted, that doesn't apply to our quantamorphs, but that's getting into theoretical sub-sub-atomic physics, and Pym gives me a headache.
